PANTHEON FOR SUBSCRIPTION APPS

One promise, from the ad to the first renewal.

Subscription app marketing needs continuity between the creative, first session and paid offer. RevenueCat reports median day-35 download-to-paid conversion of 10.7% for hard-paywall apps versus 2.1% for freemium apps. These are different cohorts, not proof that changing a paywall causes that uplift. Test the whole journey against your own economics.

THE CREATIVE STRATEGY

Optimize for a customer who understands what they are buying.

Write the promise in plain language before creating the ad. What useful action will a new user take, what requires payment and when will billing happen? Then check the store listing, onboarding and paywall against the same statement. If the ad sells a feature that is hard to find or implies a different offer, more creative volume will not repair the mismatch.

Separate concept tests from offer tests. A new opening, an annual-plan explanation and a longer trial change different things. Keep a record of what changed and compare cohorts using appropriate attribution and observation windows. Installs and clicks can provide early information, but trials, paid conversion, retention and refunds reveal different parts of the economics.

The report’s paywall and trial-length differences are observational. Apps choosing those models may differ in category, audience, product quality and pricing. Use the data to formulate a question, not to promise a conversion uplift. When localizing, review the full billing amount, currency, offer eligibility and destination experience alongside the generated text and voice.

IDEAS TO MAKE YOUR OWN

Eight starting points. One real product.

Creative hypotheses to adapt and test with your own product materials. These are illustrative concepts, not customer testimonials or promised results.

01

The first screen, honestly

Show what a new user actually sees after opening the app. Keep the ad aligned with the current onboarding rather than demonstrating a premium experience without context.

02

The first useful action

Demonstrate one reachable product benefit. If the recording is shortened, say so; avoid suggesting that every user receives the same result in a fixed time.

03

What the trial includes

Explain the real trial offer, eligibility and billing conditions. Make the benefit clear without hiding the point at which payment begins.

04

Monthly or annual?

Compare actual available plans and their billing periods. Show the full annual amount when discussing an equivalent monthly figure so that the offer stays understandable.

05

The local offer

Pair a translated creative with the correct currency and destination. Review the actual product offer rather than automatically converting a price inside the script.

06

A reason to come back

Build a returning-user concept around a genuine feature or update. Check audience permissions and offer eligibility instead of implying every former user qualifies.

07

Answer the first objection

Use an illustrative question to explain setup, effort or value. Base the answer on the product and avoid inventing testimonials to make the response persuasive.

08

Billing made understandable

Explain where users can review subscription information or help. Keep the details accurate and avoid making unsupported claims about cancellation rules across every store and country.

WITH PANTHEON

From the idea to a reviewed campaign.

  1. 01

    Map the promise

Document the product action, offer and destination. Research a creative pattern that helps explain them, then select one hypothesis for the first test.

  2. 02

    Create a consistent journey

Generate the ad and refine its layers with Vibe Edit. Check text, voice, pricing and language against the current onboarding and paywall before approving each version.

  3. 03

    Read the downstream result

Prepare the campaign and approved budget. Compare ad metrics with trial, paid conversion and retention data in your measurement tools, then carry the learning into the next creative brief.

QUESTIONS, ANSWERED

Subscription Apps: the practical details.

How should I market a subscription app?

Connect one clear benefit to the first session and the real paid offer. Research and produce creatives that explain that journey, then measure trial quality and paid outcomes alongside installs. Pantheon supports the creative workflow and Meta campaign preparation; your product and measurement tools provide the downstream context.

#

Should I use a hard paywall or freemium?

The benchmark alone cannot answer that. RevenueCat’s cohorts differ in more than the paywall model, so the conversion gap does not prove a causal uplift. Choose and test a model using your product’s value, audience, retention and economics. Keep the ad consistent with whichever experience the user will receive.

#

Do longer trials always convert better?

No. The report shows an association across trial-length cohorts, not a guarantee for an individual app. Categories, audiences and product experiences may differ. Test an available offer with suitable measurement and enough follow-up time, then assess paid retention and refunds rather than choosing trial length from conversion alone.

#

Should campaigns optimize for installs or trials?

Use an event supported by your account and measurement setup, with enough reliable volume for the campaign. Installs, trials and purchases describe different stages. Compare the downstream quality of acquired users, and do not assume a low install cost is valuable if the resulting users do not experience or pay for the product.

#

How do I localize subscription ads?

Adapt the product explanation and review the offer as well as the language. Pantheon supports 12 languages for text, voice and related creative layers. Check local currency, billing period, eligibility and the destination manually. A generated translation should not accidentally promise a price or trial that the market does not receive.

#

Can I run win-back campaigns for former subscribers?

That depends on your audience permissions, platform eligibility and actual offer. A genuine update or clearly described returning-user offer can be a testable concept. Do not imply that every former subscriber qualifies. Review reactivation quality and subsequent retention before concluding that the creative has produced a lasting improvement.
